Autonomous Vehicles

There has been very rapid developments in the field of autonomous vehicles, accelerated by large investments by the military. Already in 2002 Geo-Tec in Germany marketed an autonomous tractor. While this product was not successful, it proved that the required technologies already existed in 2002. Sooner rather than later autonomous vehicles will be a part fo the agriculture landscape.

Historically, tractors and other agricultural vehicles have been getting larger with the focus on improved efficiencies. What is most exciting about autonomous vehicles is that they have the potential to revolutionize cropping practices that have been developed with large tractors and monoculture as the foundation. Once autonomous vehicles are introduced there is likley to be a shift to smaller and smaller agricultural vehicles that have the potential to completely change the way we farm. While this may seem like science fiction, one has only to look at military technology for an indication of what might happen. The successful autonomous military vehicles are all a lot smaller than their manned equivalents (land, air & sea).
